About Dauphin Island

Dauphin Island is cigar shaped, 14 mile long island located 3 miles off the coast of Mobile County, Alabamas mainland. At its widest point Dauphin Island is 3 miles across, with no traffic lights, a small number of shops and fish markets, the best place to buy shrimp and other seafood is directly from the fishing fleet.

Dauphin Island is "Alabamas Undiscovered Treasure" with miles of beautiful, uncrowded beaches, great fishing, world famous birdwatching and a truly "laid back" atmosphere, make it an ideal place for a family vacation or romantic getaway.

The island is located 35 miles to the south of historic Mobile and 90 miles east of New Orleans. To get to the island you can travel by causeway from the mainland or on a ferry that leaves from Fort Morgan Peninsula every 90 minutes from 8 am to 5 pm.

Dauphin Island, Alabama, named after Louis XIVs great-grandson, is a barrier island located three miles south of the mouth of Mobile Bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Entry to the island is made by crossing the Gordon Persons Bridge, three mile long high rise bridge, which opened a in July, 1982 after the original draw bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Frederic in 1979. An automobile ferry from the eastern shore also offers an entry point on the eastern end of the island.

The eastern six miles of Dauphin Island are inhabited while the western 8 miles are undeveloped and privately owned. It is estimated that 1300 permanent residents call Dauphin Island home. The number of residents soars during vacation and holiday times. The entire island has been designated as a bird sanctuary and thousands of visitors come to experience the annual migrations.
